A Whale of a Story --

Why did a small movie like Free Willy become such a box office smash? Because deep down inside us, we have a profoundly emotional connection to whales and dolphins. In the spirit of that awe and affection is a true story written filled with the kind the real-life drama that is stranger and stronger than fiction.

Two journalists, husband and wife Michael Parfit and Suzanne Chishom, follow the story of Luna, an orca separated from its pod in the San Juan Islands of Washington state shortly after birth, and on his own, travels to Nootka Sound in Canada. As it is highly out of character for killer whales to isolate themselves, this action seriously concerns local fish and wildlife authorities.

When Luna starts interacting with humans near Vancouver Island in 2001, tourists see a loveable friend, scientists sense trouble, conservationists find a new cause and a local native tribe insists Luna is a symbol of a great chief's spirit. Luna's apparent thirst for human attention drives him to constantly swim near boats and even “talk” with fisherman and dock workers. Soon, a battle ensues between the native population who feel a sacred bond with Luna, the townspeople and tourists who like the orca's company and the Canadian Fish and Wildlife Authority that is determined to reunite him with his pod.

Filled with stunning underwater photography, this documentary becomes a tale that transcends man and nature and shows how even the best of intentions can lead to intense conflict. In Saving Luna, a lone orca creates a story more dramatic and touching than Hollywood might ever imagine.
