Life is a Beach --
Love has funny ways of bringing strangers together, even over the airwaves. One morning, Sunday, a marine biologist from MIT, is walking on a beautiful beach in Woods Hole, MA, when he meets Jill, a radio interviewer, to whom he is immediately attracted. Sunday is preparing for an important scientific conference and due to be interviewed on the radio that evening about his work and when he shows up at the station, he's more than pleasantly surprised to find that Jill is conducting the interview.
But life is not quite that simple. Jill is dealing with the loss of her husband, while also coping with her young teenage daughter, Anna, who is experiencing her first love with a shy and confused boy. At the same time, two other significant relationships are playing out. Sunday's best friend and fellow scientist is preparing for his wedding, and his boss is rekindling her relationship with her ex-husband. Over a five day period, this quartet of stories sorts through the complex nuances of old and new loves.
Director Andrew Silver shot his film in the natural light of early morning and late afternoon, allowing a warm, gentle appreciation for the scenic beauty of Woods Hole, the hub of environmental science in Cape Cod. Silver did his undergraduate and masters work in oceanography and earth sciences at MIT and the film subtly implies that the ocean provides a cleansing experience for his characters. As Jill advises her daughter's young boyfriend, love is like a trapeze; at some point, you just have to let go and trust that the other person will catch you.
