Even though calling a woman fat is politically incorrect these days, that doesn't mean it's easy for a Plus Size or Big-Boned Woman to feel good about the way she looks and feels. This film is a comedy about Lucy (Missi Pyle), a woman who always suffered from being the “heavy girl” in college, the one who has to grin and bear the subtle and not so subtle indignities and rejection.
After getting gastric-bypass surgery and losing her excess weight, Lucy tricks her college friends into gathering together for a long weekend, so she can finally feel like 'one of them.' Melissa McCarthy (Gilmore Girls, Pumpkin) is the caring friend who rounds up this less than supportive crew, who are too busy in their own lives to want to take time out for Lucy. And after arriving at their country retreat, the crew is not so happy to learn that Lucy has plans for them to go on a four-day hike through the wilderness.
After glamorizing her friends for years, Lucy soon sees that life isn't always greener on the other side on the other side of the scale. No matter what we look like and how we portray ourselves to the outside world, we all have hang-ups; whether they're about our looks, race, sexual identity, career, parenting abilities or position in society.
Although first time director Tate Taylor tackles some painful subjects, he doesn't make fun of the heavy girl who always wants to be thin, and treats her physical makeover with a combination of insight and humor. Watch for the hilarious cameo by Allison Janney (West Wing)
