The Real Price of Gasoline --
As the price of oil soars to unprecedented levels, there is also a proportionate increase in the loss of human life. At the delta of the Niger River in Nigeria, where a vast proportion of the planet's petroleum is excavated, bombing attacks, abductions and murders are simply part of life's daily routine. This powerful documentary bursts the benevolent corporate image of development and progress in the Third World by the giant multinational petroleum companies. In Nigeria, oil leaks into the river system destroying flora and fauna, poisoning the food chain and threatening the existence of the area's 27 million indigenous people- the Ijaws, the Ogoni and the Itsekiris. In Delta, these native peoples not only dare to ask to an end to this destruction, they are demanding an end to it. In response, they are being brutally attacked by Special Forces of the army and the police, which are armed by the oil companies. The film follows the militia of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) as they attempt to defend their natural resources, presenting to the world for the first time, shattering images of the police's speed boat patrols and the army's heavy weaponry. The Delta of the Niger is rapidly becoming a lost paradise, all in the name of the exploration and excavation of fossil fuel. Please note: Online ticket sales end 24 hours before each event.
