Best Actor (Stefano Accorsi)/Best International Feature Film/Best Music/World Cinema
Producer-turned-helmer Gilles Legrand ("Malabar Princess") returns to the French Alps for his sophomore feature, "The Maiden and the Wolves," a ripping Gallic yarn that evokes memories of Manon of the Spring. Bewitching, lushly produced pic casts French model Laetitia Casta as a feisty Edwardian-era femme whose fate becomes entangled with that of the last wild wolf pack on Mont Blanc.
Best Director (Branko Schmidt)/Cinema of Conscience/World Cinema
A depressing, rain-soaked tale about human traffic, in this case Chinese immigrants seeking to cross the Bosnian-Croatian border on their way west. Strong perfs and impassioned camerawork inject interest in the inhuman proceedings, which culminate in a violent finale of Tarantinoesque proportions.
Film Company Of The Year Award/World Cinema
"I cry, weep and feel a strong sense of faith each time I read or hear the story of Milarepa, the great Yogi of Tibet." --The Dalai Lama Milarepa, the first feature by Neten Chokling Rinpoche, tells the story of the formative years of Milarepa, an 11th century Tibetan poet and mystic and his journey from seeking revenge to enlightenment. Set in the magnificent Spiti Valley close to the border between India and Tibet, the film has spectacular cinematography and convincing performances from a cast that includes Jamyang Lodro, the obstreperous football-obsessed youngster in The Cup as Thopaga, the young Milarepa. The cast and crew also include monks from the Pema Ewam Choegar Gyurmeling Monastery in India and Tibet of which Chokling Rinpoche is the spiritual head.
World Cinema
Returning home from work one day, Miri is pressed into service to watch the young son of their Chinese housekeeper as she runs an apparently urgent errand. The agitated mother never returns, so it's up to Miri, Gila and her clutch of gal pals to figure out how to communicate with the boy (now nicknamed "Noodle") and figure out what happened to mom and how to get him home.
Film Company Of The Year Award/World Cinema
World Cinema Set in ancient Tibet PRINCE OF THE HIMALAYAS is a visually ravishing historical epic with stunning scenery, richly saturated color, and lush costuming. It is an adaptation of the Shakespeare's Hamlet. A perfect film to see under the stars as a "Films al Fresco" Festival gala.
Arts In Film/Best Sound/Featured/World Cinema
This marvelous film is inspired by the true story of Mirco Mencacci, one of the most gifted Italian sound editors working today, who happens to be blind. Born in a small village in Tuscany, in 1971, Mirco is a bright, lively 10-year-old, crazy about the movies - especially Westerns and adventure films. His father, an incurable idealist, is a truck driver. One day, while Mirco is playing with an old rifle, the gun accidentally goes off leaving him blind. At that time, Italian law considered blind people hopelessly handicapped, and did not permit them to attend public school. Hence, young Mirco's parents are forced to shut their son up in a special school for the blind. In the beginning Mirco does not accept his new condition, but he is feisty and determined. When he finds an old tape recorder and a few used reels and discovers that by cutting and splicing tape he can create little fairy tales made only of sounds, a brand-new world opens up to him and to his school mates. The big issues of friendship, bullying, disability and creativity are touched on in this unusual tale. Think ‘Cinema Paradiso’, crossed with ‘Dead Poets Society’. Please note: Online ticket sales end 24 hours before each event. Tickets may still be available for purchase at the venue.
World Cinema
Traders' Dreams - a journey into the eBay world.
