Imagine entering a dreamlike story which unfolds like a new chapter of 1001 Arabian Nights. Bab' Aziz, the third feature by the Tunisian filmmaker and poet Nacer Khemir, reminds us that narrative fables can offer timeless life lessons.
Elderly Bab'Aziz and his young granddaughter travel through the desert to a conference of dervishes that is held every three decades. To take her mind off dangers and hardships, Bab'Aziz relates the legend of a young prince who becomes obsessed with looking at his reflection in a pool of water and thus, neglects his own commitments and duties. On their journey, the travelers meet other characters with their own stories, including a young man looking to avenge a brother murdered by dervishes and a poet who has fallen in love with a dervish. Khemir's story stresses the value of introspection versus self-absorption and with today's increasing conflict between the Islam and the West, this enduring fairy tale combine elements of Sufi mysticism with enduring values and messages that resist the confines of time and cultures. A beautiful mystical experience that will linger in your minds eye long after the last frame. Please note: Online ticket sales end 24 hours before each event.
