A Charming Hilarious Hungarian Heist film --

Two love stories in one movie. Involving the same two people. This Hungarian palacsinta (delicious Hungarian pastry made of two crossed little delicate pancakes filled with fruit preserves and sprinkled with powdered sugar—sweet and soft with a little piquancy) of a movie will make you swoon and laugh and be intrigued; topped off by an excellent chase scene. And it has a very happy ending.

The story beings with brutish mechanical Communist officials investigating a mansion in 1950’s Hungary, for no real reason. That is where the young man, a driver for the Secret Police, saves and falls in love with the young girl. He hides her on the roof. He is handsome, she is heavenly. The story begins again fifty years later, only this time the Lothario is crawling on hands and knees so as not to be seen by the bureaucratic rent collector.

The aged are ignored and neglected by the government in present day Hungary. The romance that began on a roof is not so rosy now. The old fellow resorts to crime, with the help of his powerful old car and his partner his wife. They rob banks.

There are entertaining subplots highlighted by a sexy young police couple in more intellectual than physical pursuit of the septuagenarian robbers.

This movie has many subtle moments and many endearing and entertaining scenes. It is not to be missed. Especially the final scene.

A “Films al Fresco™” screening under the stars.
